Why is my gate opener not working?
Quick answer
More often than not, it's something simple: industry service data puts roughly half of gate opener service calls down to something a basic check resolves, no parts needed. Before you pay for a service call, run through five things in order: the breaker, a full power cycle of the operator, the remote's battery, the photo eyes, and the gate itself on its manual release. If the gate swings freely by hand and still won't run, the problem is likely the operator's electronics or motor, and that's when it's worth calling someone.
Step 1: Check the breaker and power at the panel
Start at your electrical panel. Gate operators are usually on their own breaker, and North Texas thunderstorms trip breakers all the time. Look for a breaker that sits between ON and OFF; flip it fully off, then back on. If the operator is fed from an outdoor outlet, check whether that outlet is on a GFCI, either a test/reset button on the outlet itself or on another outlet upstream in the garage, and press reset.
While you're at it, look at the operator. Most units have a status or power light on the control board or housing. No light at all with the breaker on points to a wiring or power-supply problem between the panel and the gate. A light that's on or blinking means power is reaching the operator and the problem is further down the list. If your operator is solar, a week of overcast skies or a shaded panel can simply run the battery down, so give the panel a wipe and check its charge indicator if it has one.
Step 2: Power-cycle the operator
Control boards are small computers, and like any computer they can lock up, especially after a power blink, a surge, or a lightning-heavy Texas storm. A full power cycle clears most of these lockups.
Full means full: turn off the breaker or the operator's power switch, and also disconnect the backup battery if your unit has one, because the battery will keep the board alive and defeat the reset. Wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the battery, and restore power. Give the operator a minute to boot, then test the gate. If it runs normally, you're done; if it fails again after the next storm, a surge protector on the gate circuit is cheap insurance.
Step 3: Replace the remote battery
If the gate works from the keypad or a second remote but not from your usual clicker, the remote's battery is the prime suspect. Most modern gate and garage remotes take a CR2032 3-volt coin cell, the flat silver disc about the size of a nickel; some brands and older remotes use a 12-volt A23 mini alkaline instead. Pop the remote open, match the battery printed inside, and swap it. Either type costs a few dollars at any pharmacy or hardware store.
This step is also your isolation test. If nothing operates the gate, not the remote, not the keypad, not the wired or app control, the problem is at the operator, not in your hand. If only one device fails, that device is the problem, and reprogramming or replacing a single remote is far cheaper than a service call.
Step 4: Clear and align the photo eyes
A gate that opens fine but refuses to close, or reverses on its own, is the classic photo-eye symptom. The photo eyes are the small sensors facing each other across the gate path, and anything that interrupts the beam makes the operator refuse to close: spider webs, wasp nests, dirt on the lens, tall grass, a trash can, or a sensor that got bumped out of alignment.
Wipe both lenses, clear anything in the beam path, and check that the two sensors point squarely at each other; most have an indicator light that goes solid when the beam is aligned. Many operators also flash a diagnostic code on the board when a safety device is blocking operation, which your manual can decode. Whatever you find, fix the sensor rather than unplugging it. Step 5: Use the manual release and check for binding
Every operator has a manual release, usually a key or lever on the unit, that disconnects the motor so you can move the gate by hand. Release it and swing or roll the gate through its full travel. It should move smoothly with light effort. If it drags, scrapes, or fights you, the opener was never the problem: the gate is.
Common culprits in DFW are a sagging gate leaf, worn hinges, a slide gate track packed with dirt or gravel, and above all a leaning hinge post. When to call a pro, and what repairs typically cost
If the gate moves freely on the manual release, power is confirmed at the operator, and no remote or keypad will run it, the fault is almost certainly in the operator itself: the control board, the motor, a transformer, or lightning-damaged wiring. Those are bench diagnoses, and it's reasonable to call a technician at that point rather than keep guessing.
As a rough guide, published market figures for automatic gate repair in the U.S. run about $550 to $1,500 for a typical visit, with circuit board replacement commonly in the $150 to $400 range and motor replacement roughly $500 to $1,200 depending on the operator. One safety note before you tinker: gate operators fall under UL 325, the safety standard that requires entrapment protection, monitored photo eyes and safety edges, on automated gates. Never bypass, unplug, or jumper a safety device to make a gate run; modern operators deliberately fault out when a monitored sensor fails, because a gate without working entrapment protection can injure a child or crush a car.
